MAYDON WHARF

Investigations and Design

Project Sheet:

Prestedge Retief Dresner Wijnberg were appointed by Transnet Limited to assess the condition and load capacity of the existing fifteen berth structures at Maydon Wharf and identify the works required to upgrade or replace these berths.

The new quays were to accommodate larger design ships and to provide suitable load carrying capacity for the handling of cargos over the berths.

PRDW determined that the existing steel sheet pile wall berths needed to be replaced or rebuilt.  Furthermore, in order to accommodate the larger ships the berths would have to be deepened from approximately -10m CD to -14.5m CD.

It was decided to rebuild Berth 12 first for which PRDW were appointed to carry out detailed design and procurement documentation.  This berth will consist of a 270m long anchored steel sheet pile wall with a depth of -14.5m CD. The new quay wall and cope beam was designed to accommodate a future front rail for a container gantry crane.
