LNG import terminal for South Africa

PRDW, working closely with Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), were responsible for completing various studies to identify sites for the location of LNG marine facilities within the Ports of Ngqura, Richards Bay and Saldanha and to confirm the suitability thereof.

PRDW’s scope included the following:

  • Site screening and identification of preferred sites
  • Pre-feasibility engineering study on the preferred sites including
    • Metocean assessment
      • waves
      • wind
      • water levels
    • Geotechnical assessment
    • Ship manoeuvring studies
    • Moored vessel motions and terminal uptime assessment
    • Pipeline routing studies and gas network connection
    • Preliminary engineering
      • Marine structures
      • Dredging and reclamation
      • Revetments
      • Pipelines
  • A hazard identification workshop and quantitative risk assessment to assess the risk posed by the LNG import facilities

The site selection and pre-feasibility studies identified suitable sites for the development of the LNG import facilities which were subsequently released to the market at the South Africa Gas Options Conference in October 2016.
