BOEGOEBAAI PORT DEVELOPMENT

PRDW was appointed by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to undertake a pre-feasibility study for the development of a new port at Boegoebaai on the west coast of South Africa.

Boegoebaai forms part of the Richtersveld municipality in the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape. Although a very large district, this sparse land is one of the least developed areas in South Africa in terms of economic and social development. In order to address the above, the Richtersveld Municipality Integrated Development Plan (IDP) was compiled. One of the identified opportunities to bring social and economic upliftment to the region is the development of a deep water port which will serve as a connection point between the province and the rest of Africa.

The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of developing a deep water port in Boegoebaai, primarily dedicated to bulk exports.

PRDW’s scope of work included the following:

  • Compiling a port development framework plan
  • Collating and reviewing existing site information
  • Preliminary quarry assessment
  • Coastal processes assessment (MIKE 21 SW and MIKE 21 BW)
  • Desktop ship manoeuvring assessment
  • Port logistics and throughput assessment
  • Preliminary engineering of marine structures, breakwaters and landside infrastructure
  • Capital cost estimate
  • Implementation schedule development
  • Attending stakeholder meetings with the Northern Cape government and Transnet

While the primary role of the port will be the export of dry bulk material, a multipurpose terminal has also been provided for the initial development phase. The port master plan has been developed to provide sufficient flexibility to accommodate multiple additional users and various types of commodities in the future.
