CHOLLIN COAL JETTY

PRDW were appointed by Portuaria Cabo Froward S A to design a new 2.5 MTPA coal terminal in the bay of Coronel, Biobío region in Chile.

The project included the design of a jetty and a mechanised unloading system, with a capacity of 1,200 TPH of coal, to service Panamax bulk carriers up to 80,000DWT.

The project required the following marine works, designed by PRDW:

  • A platform for two fixed loaders (with a capacity of 1,000 TPH each)
  • Mooring dolphins
  • Berthing dolphins
  • Coal Hoppers
  • Support structures
  • Transfer towers
  • Access trestle 1,080m in length
  • Technical specifications of equipment
  • The design of the mechanical system, composed of hoppers and conveyor belts with 1,200 TPH capacity.

Further engineering input from PRDW included the following:

  • Analysis and definition of marine terminal layout
  • Analysis of coal unloading equipment (cranes, hoppers, conveyor belts, transfer
  • towers and others)
  • Study of coastal natural conditions
  • Study of the wave climate and wave penetration to the berth
  • Numerical modelling of berthing vessel motion
  • Study of the jetty operational availability (downtime)
  • Technical documents for tender and construction
  • Technical support in the tender and construction phases
