PRDW was appointed by Transnet Limited / Transnet National Ports Authority for the widening of the Durban Harbour entrance channel. Designs were required for upgrading the south breakwater and for constructing a new north groyne. The appointment was extended to include construction supervision on site as well as administration of the construction contract.
Extensive damage to the south breakwater necessitated an upgrade. The limit for maximum dolos size (30t) had been reached on the structure and therefore 45t Antifer cubes where used. This was also to allow for potential toe erosion subsequent to construction which requires a very robust unit.
The structure was also provided with new filter layers on the lee which prevented sand migrating through the structure (which was originally constructed in 1903 with large core material that allowed migration of sand).
The new north groyne was designed with 20t dolosse on the head of the structure with decreasing size Antifer cubes (10t and 5t) along the trunk of the structure where the direction of wave attack becomes parallel to the structure along the port entrance channel.
