DURBAN HARBOUR ENTRANCE WIDENING AND DEEPENING – SAND BYPASS SYSTEM

PRDW was appointed by Transnet Ltd to carry out the feasibility design, detail design and construction supervision of a new sand hopper system to replace the demolished sand hopper infrastructure (as part of the Entrance Widening project). Construction of the new facility began in July 2012.

The new sand hopper is capable of receiving sand from Transnet’s maintenance dredger at a nominal rate of 12,000 m³/h and provides adequate storage capacity for two dredger loads (total bulk volume of 5,550 m3). Oversized material is screened prior to entering the hopper and only good quality sand is provided for the beach feeding scheme.

PRDW was the lead consultant through all engineering stages of the project (concept, feasibility and detail design stages). This included the construction supervision. PRDW’s team of sub-consultants provided technical expertise in a number of engineering disciplines including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil works (building works and services), pipeline and process engineering as well as control and automation.

PRDW’s multi-disciplinary site team was responsible for supervising the construction of the works, including designer and specialist input during all testing, inspections and commissioning of the new sand bypass system.

The new sand bypass system includes the following components:

  • Dredger reclaim connection
  • Direct discharge and slurry discharge pipelines
  • Sand hopper, including inlet screening facility and filtration bay (outlet)
  • Gantry structure including slurry pumping system and control room
  • Excess water discharge system
  • Backwash pumping system
  • Clear water intake
  • Main pump station
  • Control and automation via SCADA and PLC systems

The Transnet Sand Bypass system is integrated with eThekwini Municipality’s Sand Beach Feeding Scheme (booster pump stations and pipelines).
