GRANGER BAY WATERCLUB BREAKWATER REPAIR

Assessment of breakwater damage, dolos movements and breakages as well as cracking of units. Correlation of damage versus wave measurements and assessment and costing of future monitoring and repair options.

The dolos section of the Waterclub breakwater showed significant cracking of units. PRDW did a status quo assessment of damage based on a CSIR report, visual inspection above water as well as an underwater inspection. This was followed by a number of repair options and trade-off study to assist with future monitoring and maintenance.

The main breakwater for the Water Club was completed in 1995 and showed significant signs of damage and cracking of dolosse.  Access to the breakwater has been cut off by the construction of buildings at its root after completion of the breakwater. It is a critical element for a functioning marina and the Water Club appointed PRDW for the following scope of work:

  • Damage assessment
  • Investigate level of cracking in existing dolosse
  • Analysis of storm wave conditions and correlation with damage
  • Assessing the risk of future damage
  • Assessing various options for future maintenance
  • Design land based access onto the breakwater
  • Consider marine based access for future repairs
  • Design modifications to the breakwater cap to allow crane access
  • Cost estimates of different maintenance options as well as a trade-off study
