MAPUTO CHANNEL DREDGING

PRDW was appointed by the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) to provide detail engineering input for the Maputo Channel Dredging Project. The primary objective of the detail design stage was to optimize the volume of dredging required for deepening the access and navigation channels to the Port of Maputo. As part of this appointment, PRDW was also requested to carry out a detailed assessment (Stage 2) for the southern channel which was being considered as an alternative to the existing northern channel.

The detail engineering for the channel dredging scope of work involved an iterative design process in order to refine the engineering completed in the previous project feasibility stage. The purpose of these additional design iterations was to minimise the volume of material to be dredged and further improve the accuracy of the project cost estimate.

The following tasks formed part of the detail engineering stage:

  • Validation of optimised channel design layout using navigation simulations
  • Channel slope optimisation
  • Updating the dredging material assessment and dredging quantities
  • Review of the dredging methodology and equipment selection
  • Updating the project execution schedule for the dredging works
  • Updating the project cost estimate
  • Updating the risk assessment
  • Preparation of tender documentation including specifications and construction drawings
  • Preparation of specification for the procurement of aids to navigation

The following tasks formed part of the southern channel Stage 2 study:

  • Sedimentation modelling (calibration and validation of previous numerical modelling work)
  • Updating life cycle cost analysis
  • Updating viability assessment for southern channel option
