NGQURA NEW DEEPWATER PORT

PRDW were appointed by Transnet Limited / Transnet National Ports Authority as lead consultants for the project from feasibility stage through to detailed design. The project comprised the planning, design and construction supervision of a new bulk commodity port for the proposed 15,000 ha industrial development zone of Coega.

The scope of work included responsibility for site investigations, marine data collection, physical and mathematical model studies, port layout, breakwaters, quay walls, dredging work and a permanent sand bypassing facility.

The work was divided into four contracts.

The maritime contract comprised a main breakwater of 2,610m, a secondary breakwater of 1,090m, 1,500m of quay walls and 14 million m3 of excavation. Both breakwaters incorporated reinforced concrete caissons at the roundheads.

The dredging contract entailed removing 12 million m3 of material to obtain a basin depth of –16 m CD and approach channel of -18m CD.

The sand bypass contract addressed the construction of the sand pumping facility to ensure that the natural littoral drift of 200,000m3 bypasses the port each year.

The landside infrastructure contract incorporated the provision of roads and services to the various regions of the port.
