ANGAMOS POWER STATION: SEA WATER INTAKE AND OUTFALL SYSTEM

BELFI appointed PRDW, in an EPC type project with Cobra Central Termica Mejillones S A, to conduct a basic and detail design of a sea water intake and outfall system for the Angamos Thermoelectric Plant in Mejillones Bay, Antofogasta, Chile.

The project required the design of a 5,200 m3/h sea water intake located at a depth of-8.0m NRS through a pipeline approx. 0.9m in diameter, and the design of the 3 500m3/h water outfall approx. 0.93m in diameter. Their respective diffusers are located at -8m NRS.

The project also required the structural design of the pipe support jetty and the intake towers.

Further engineering input from PRDW included the following analyses and studies:

  • Hydrodynamic analysis to determine loads on the pipe
  • Design of ballast for pipeline stability
  • Design of sea water intake tower
  • Verification of the pipeline hydraulic analysis and heights of the intake and outfall system
  • Beach variation studies to define the buried section of the pipeline
  • Load analysis for the launch and installation
  • Diffuser and outfall diameter design
  • Structural design of coastal structures
