The construction company BELFI, commissioned PRDW to provide engineering services for the first automated marine terminal in Latin America for the shipment of copper concentrate from CODELCO. PRDW was responsible for the conceptual, basic and detailed engineering of the marine and land works. The project consisted of the development of storage areas in special containers, a mechanised reclaim system and ship loading.
Terminal de Graneles del Norte (TGN) has been awarded a 25-year tender by CODELCO for the shipment and export of copper concentrate through a mechanised port. The project consists of the development of all marine and land facilities for the reception, storage and shipment of copper concentrate through an automated marine terminal.
The concentrate will be handled in special 20” containers, which will be received and stacked by automatic cranes of the ARMG type. For shipment, a mechanised material handling system has been designed, consisting of hoppers for receiving the container load, conventional conveyor belts on land and tubular conveyors on the access bridge, and a radial-quadrant ship loader for loading the product onto bulk carriers of Handymax (12,000 dwt) to Panamax (85,000 dwt) type.
The engineering developed by PRDW included:
• Marine engineering project, wave climate study and extreme wave and swell study
• Inland engineering project: container platforms, ARMG crane girders, tunnel and closed galleries for belt conveyors, transfer tower, service buildings, electrical room, etc.
• Material handling project and equipment specifications and selection
• Support in the quotation and selection of suppliers
• Rail project (arrival of containers by train)
• Study of berthing and mooring behaviour
• Earthworks, roads and civil engineering project
• Project of installations, piping, drinking water, sewage, fire network
• Architectural design
• Electrical, instrumentation and control design
• Manoeuvrability study
In addition, he was responsible for, supervised, reviewed and coordinated the following studies and activities:
• Soil mechanics study
• Field measurements
• Construction consultancy and onsite supervision
