Inside the project

Blue Dolphin: Bulks terminal

Unloading terminal for oil, coal, biomass, limestone and petcoke for Mejillones and Andino power plants. The project entailed the detail engineering of marine and landside infrastructure.

The Blue Dolphin project was developed in order to import various bulk materials (fuel, coal, petcoke, biomass, rock) for two separate power plants (Mejillones and Andino). The project entailed the detail engineering of marine and landside infrastructure. BELFI S.A. was awarded the construction project and PRDW was responsible for all engineering aspects as part of the EPC team.

The detail engineering was provided for the following marine and landside infrastructure:

  • Berth structure and unloading platform of 240 m length and 24 m wide for operating 2 no. of gantry cranes with 1500tph capacity and 21m reach. The structure included
seismic isolators that allowed optimization of pile and beam sizes and also aimed to improve the structural performance under seismic conditions. This configuration also
provides improvement on the mechanical equipment performance and survivability
    under these conditions.
  • A 680m long access trestle with pile bents at 40m spans and supporting a tubular conveyor for unloading materials.
  • Landside infrastructure: transfer towers, warehouses, stockpile yard, electrical rooms, port access infrastructure, etc.

The following specialist studies and ancillaries were also part of the detail engineering scope of work and carried out by PRDW:

  • Wave climate study and extreme conditions assessment.
  • Downtime study and vessel motions for moored vessels.
  • MEPI works.
  • Services (firefighting, dust control, potable water, stormwater, Marpol waste reception facility, sewage and fuel discharge station).
  • Materials handling project including specification of cranes.
  • HVAC and electrical rooms.
  • Construction supervision.
